How to Capture Essence

When I go on walks, my pockets become laden with rocks or plant life, my talismans of place. I can't help myself.

Not everything remains. Fresh flowers are ephemeral; the moment plucked, life begins to fade. Some people make water elixirs to capture their essence. I make photographs.

So it came to be that one day while walking through the woods towards the beach on Lopez Island, that I found Pieris in the woods and the bronze Iris on an embankment near the ocean. They appeared to belong together. When back in the studio they fit perfectly into an inkwell, also recently acquired in an antique shop on nearby San Juan Island.
